Three Working Days Between the Mid Autumn Festival and National Day: Managing Room Status for Maximum Revenue

The Mid Autumn Festival holiday runs from September 25 to 27, and the National Day holiday from October 1 to 7. September 28 to 30 are the three working days in between.

For a hotel operations team, these are not ordinary working days. Checkouts from the first holiday, arrivals for the second, room cleaning, maintenance closeout and unfinished service items from the prior shift converge in this window. Maximising room status revenue is not a last minute price increase. It means turning confirmed bookings into rooms that can be delivered on time, while reducing delivery failures and remediation caused by room status errors, missed handovers and unfinished services.

Use One Data Standard: Confirmed Bookings Only

Each day, pull six types of information from the reservation system and front desk handover record: arrival date, departure date, length of stay, room type changes, cancellation or rescheduling status, and unfinished service items.

This simple standard avoids common errors. A booking whose status is not confirmed cannot be treated as an expected arrival. If a room move, rescheduling or cancellation appears only in a chat and not on the checklist, the next shift still sees the old room status. The checklist and system must match. Verbal information cannot replace a record.

A Five Field Checklist for the Front Desk, Housekeeping and Duty Manager

The first field is today’s arrivals: room type, room count, length of stay and the arrival information shown on the booking. For National Day arrivals, mark confirmed service requirements as well, so that a room is not held while a service requirement is missed.

The second field is today’s departures: departing room types, room count and the departure pattern. Housekeeping can then sequence cleaning, inspection and rooms ready for delivery without guessing at the peak.

The third field is changes and cancellations: record the original status, current status, time of change and handler for every room move, rescheduling and cancellation. Anyone can then trace why a room status changed.

The fourth field is the room status baseline and exceptions: list daily counts of dirty rooms, rooms being cleaned, rooms out for maintenance, expected arrivals and expected departures. For a room that cannot move through the normal process, add the owner and next check time. Without a baseline, an exception cannot be judged. Without an owner, it simply remains in the handover.

The fifth field is unfinished service items: for example left belongings, invoices, complaint follow up, extra beds and confirmed amenity requests. Assign every item to a named owner and close it only after the outcome is recorded. A shift change does not end responsibility.

Three Checks Every Day Keep Changes in the Day

The morning shift checks that day’s expected arrivals, expected departures and the previous night’s outstanding items. The middle shift updates the checklist as bookings change and confirms that each room status exception has an owner. The night shift prepares the next day’s priorities and reviews them face to face with the incoming shift.

Each check needs to answer only three questions: does the checklist match the system; can today’s changes affect tomorrow’s room status; and who will follow up on each unfinished item and when.

This is not another layer of reporting. It consolidates information scattered across systems, handover books and verbal communication into one work surface that can be checked and taken over.

Two 48 Hour Checkpoints to Address Handover Risk Early

Hold only two short meetings, one 48 hours before the Mid Autumn Festival period and one 48 hours before the National Day period. The first confirms expected arrivals and departures, the departure peak and outstanding items for the Mid Autumn Festival period. The second confirms room types, expected arrivals, maintenance rooms and unfinished service items for National Day. The September 28 to 30 working days do not require a separate meeting series. They belong in the National Day handover preparation.

Keep attendees to the front desk supervisor, housekeeping supervisor and duty manager. Do not retell the process. Confirm item by item which room status exceptions remain open, who owns them and when they will be checked again; which service items must move to the next window; and whether the next shift receives the same version of the checklist. Record the conclusion in the handover log.

Hotels with high occupancy, many long stay guests or non negotiable brand procedures do not need to create a parallel mechanism. Fold the five fields into the existing handover form, appoint a maintainer and fix the handover time. This is usually more reliable than adding a complex tool.

On the evening of September 30, compile every room status error, missed handover and unfinished item from the three days. Use it directly as an input to National Day operations. The manager’s job is to ensure that the next shift receives a complete checklist that can be checked and has named ownership.
